!!!!!!CHICKEEEEN!!!!!!

Hi my name is Romeo and I am learning how to do an information report. My report is on chickens. I would like it if you would have a read and see what awesome creatures chickens are and learn some interesting facts about chickens.

Chicken

DID you know that a chicken is related to a T-Rex guess how big the T-Rex would be beside the chicken.

Characteristics of a chicken.
A chicken is a bird and it is the most common bird
in the world.  A chicken is different to other birds because they have a comb and wattles which are extra bits of skin on their head and face.  There are lots of different breeds but they are similar in having squat round bodies, dense feathers and high arched tails. A chicken has 4 toes on each foot.  A chicken like all birds lays eggs.  They have coloured ear lobes that determine the colour of their eggs.  A male chicken is called a rooster and a female chicken is called a hen.  Roosters look different from hens because they are bigger, leaner and have brightly coloured feathers.  They also wattles and combs are bigger and brighter.  A rooster also makes a Cockadoodledo sound to mark its territory.  A hen looks different from a rooster because they have lighter feathers and some are even pale white.  They do not crow like a rooster but make a clucking sound when they lay their eggs.

Some different breeds of chickens that have interesting features are
Silky chickens.  They are white chickens with feathers that feel like silk and satin.  They have black skin and bones.  They also have 5 toes on each foot instead of 4.

Araucana Chickens also known as the easter egg chicken have massive ear lobes that are coloured blue or green. This means they lay blue or green eggs.

Golden Laced Wyandotte is a beautiful chicken with a rose comb and gold lace like feathers.

Chickens habitat
Chickens have been domesticated for a long time so they now live in close proximity to humans.  We would say that they would live in backyards or farms.  The only chicken that lives in the wild is the red jungle fowl which lives in jungles in Asia.
For a chicken to live happy it needs space to walk around and search for food, spread its  wings and keep its mind active.  Chickens also need a chicken coop to roost at night.  Chickens can be found in most countries around the world so they can survive in different climates.  Some breeds of chickens like the Golden Laced Wyandotte are more suited to climates and other breeds like the Andalusians are more suited to warmer climates.

ENEMIES
A chicken that lives on a farm usually lives in a flock of 2 or more chickens with a rooster that looks after the hens.  This is because there are animals that like to steal chickens and eat them.  Not just humans! The animals are coyotes, foxes, hawks, racoons, mink, owls and domesticated dogs.  Snakes also steal eggs and sometimes the chicks.  To protect the chicken you need to cover the coop with special wire to stop the predator from getting in.  Some predators even dig under the wire.  A rooster helps because he sounds the alarm by crowing and some roosters will try and defend against small predators and birds.

Favourite food of chickens
Chickens are omnivores and eat a variety of food.  If they are on a farm that they can roam on they will eat insects, grasses, weeds and seeds.  They also eat grains, fruit and vegetables such as broccoli, bananas, grapes, pineapple, tomatoes, celery, strawberries and apples.  Chickens also eat stones known as grit to break down their food because they don't have teeth.

Facts about chickens
There are 5 different species of wild chicken called The Red Jungle Fowl, Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Grey Junglefowl, Green Junglefowl and Gallus gallus.Chickens lay different coloured eggs depending on the colour of their ear lobes.  Chickens with white earlobes lay white eggs. Chickens with dark or red earlobes lay brown eggs.  Araucana Chickens have faded blue or green ear lobes and lay blue or green eggs

Chickens are amazing creatures.  There is so much to love about them. Not only are they amazing to look at and watch but they are also cuddly with humans, affectionate, have great personalities and are curious about the world they live in.
Have you ever held a chick?

Fun facts about polar bears

Polar bear
  • Polars bears are the largest carnivores on land.
  • Male polar bears can weigh up to 680 Kg.
  • Scientists think that there 20000 polar bears in the world.
  • The scientific name for the polar bear is ursus maritimus.
  • Seals are the most of a polar bear's diet.
  • Polar bears can reach up to speeds of 40km on land and 10km in the water.
  • Polar bears have rough feet to stop them from slipping around on the ice.
  • When it is very cold some polar bears will cover their faces to stop heat from getting out of their noses.
  • Female polar bears dig a den to give birth to cubs.
  • Polar bears have such amazing fur and fat and in summer it can trap a lot of heat so the polar bear gets too hot and has to lie on the ice to cool down.

Dolphins

Dolphins are awesome

What I already knew about dolphins.

Dolphins are mammals that live in the ocean.  They swim past Kaikoura and live
in pods. I have seen them doing flips out of the water along the coast of Kaikoura.

What I learned about dolphins

Dolphins can be bred in captivity.  The study showed that captive dolphins
like to interact with humans.  Dolphins can live in sea pens in captivity.

What I want to know about dolphins.

How do they breed?
How do they communicate to each and show affection?
How many breeds of dolphins are there in the world?
How long do dolphins sleep for?

What age does the baby dolphin leave its Mum?

Colour find

Colour find
Today we did a Colour Find what's in the bag experiment.

My Mum put 6 Lego blocks into a black bag.  She said there were 2 different colours - orange and blue.  I didn't know how many were blue or how many were orange.

I predicted that there were 4 blue and 2 orange blocks.

We did 10 takes out of the bag.

BOARD GAME

Today, me, my sister and Mum played a board game called ''Sorry".  This is a board game that my mum played with her sister when she was a child so my Yiayia  (grandma in Greek) kept it safe.  I will describe it for you because its a really fun game.  You need 2-4 players.  The board is set out as a track around the edge so you move your counter from start to the safe zone and then home.  Instead of a dice you use cards - they give instructions on what to do.  For example, start a man out, or move two space and take another card.  You can't start until you get a one or a two.  The best card to get for you is a card called SORRY. This card sends one of the other players counters back to start.  It is good for you but not for others.  We started off the game to a good start because I got a two so I got to start a man out and take another card. The first person to get a man into home was my sister but my mum made a massive comeback.  I was losing so my sister was mad of her winning because normally in our games whoever is losing will win.  Eventually I  won the game and my sister and Mum were facing off to get a two. "YES" said Isabella.  S he came second and my mum came third. It was a really fun game and we enjoyed it and cant wait to play it again!  What is your favourite game to play?

Run boy run!

Today we did running around the block 5 times.  You would think it is short but it is not!  My mum said to get up and do some running with me. My sister Isabella had to do it too, I wanted to time myself so I got my stopwatch.  Ready-get set- go!  My sister ran off in front of me and my mum. Well it wasn't a race but that's how my sister runs, so me and my mum just ran together. Almost there, I sprinted the last part and stopped the stopwatch.  Me and my mum got 2.47 minutes, my sister got 2 minutes. We had a rest to cool off and have a drink.  Second time I got off faster because I was ready to run. The last one was like a warm up.  "Yes!" I said to myself.  I got 2.41 minutes this time, 6 less seconds than last time.  My sister got 2.40 min.  40 more seconds than last time.  For the 3 time my sister didn't do it as she was too tired from trying to break her point shoes in, which is really hard so don't judge.  Dang I got 3.07 minutes.  That was not my best.  I was very tired so it is fair enough, my mum went inside to check if my sister wanted to do the last one.  She said no.  I almost conked out on the last one I couldn't even sprint the last 20 m so I got 3.39 minutes. When I got inside I had a big drink and went to have a shower.  I loved it and can't wait to do it again.  What sort of exercise have you been doing and can you recommend any?

Seriously

Today I was going to bike to my friends house to drop off his helmet.  When we got there I was very happy to see him, but we did have to keep our distance. We talked a lot about games and how we were going to contact each other through the games we play online.  Then we were going back home, my Dad was leading us through a very unrecognised route to the bike park.  Sadly in the bike park, dad was taking us to a one way trail that was going the wrong way, so we had to go back.  Seriously I said to Dad, listen to Mum.  Me, my Mum and sister knew which way to go so my Dad just stayed behind.  When we got home I was so hungry but I was still really happy to see my friend!!

Cake cake cake!

Two days ago it was Saturday and I want to tell you all about it. I woke up not wanting to get up it took a long time for my sister to wake up to but finely we woke up the day was on to a rough start until I saw my breakfast waiting to be eaten. It was a toasted bagel with cream cheese - yummy! Always we go for a walk in the morning. We didn't go for a long walk but we did go for a nice walk.  When we got home I was really bored but then my mum asked me if I wanted to bake a cake. I definitely said yes, who can't resist a cake.  We were making a chocolate cake when my sister got off from reading. She helped me stir the mixture in while my Mum was getting the cake tin ready.  The cake was delicious and I was happy I made it. I think it was my favourite part of the day.

Bike jumps

Today I did some awesome jumps on my bike.  They were both drop offs. If you were wondering what they are, they are some kind of jump that you are on a platform then you drop off a ledge. One of my drop offs were harder than the other because you had to go up to do it then you don't get much speed to drop off so you kind of just have to trust your self to go down. Why I wanted to do them, is because my Dad took me to the skate park to do some jumps and then he showed me what he could do, so I copied.  I think I am awesome at doing bike stunts and I cant wait to learn more.  Tomorrow I am going to start to learn how to do wheelies!! I am very excited.  Do you use your bike to do stunts like me?

Sorry there are no videos they are on my mums phone and we couldn't figure out how my mum could send them to me😢.

Another day in quarantine

The start of the day I just finished my Lego.  It was a Star Wars Lego set. It was hard to make but I just finished it so I am really happy.  After we went for a walk like every morning, today the walk was much shorter I thought it would be. The sun came out so my Mum went out to do the garden and pick some Cranberries so I went out to play with my Lego.  My friend Daniel started calling on face time so I was happy to see him.  Almost the end of the day we went bike riding on the same track I did yesterday.

Bike ride

Hello guys. Yesterday I went bike riding in Burwood Forest and I want to tell you about it. When my Mum said we were going for a bike ride I didn't want to because I was playing on the device but when I got out I was much more happy.  At Burwood Forest we went on a track to a big hill. We had to ride up a big hill to a watch tower.  After we had some photos we went down hill.  I went in front because I am the fastest going down hill.  After down hill we went up a sharp hill.  You know that it's best to go up a big hill because you get to down after.  We went into a lot of bush and dry grass to get out. After we went out of the track we went home to have a shower. The bike ride was really fun I said to my Mum and now I want to do it again!
Do you like going for bike rides and where do you like to go?

The most delicious slice ever!!!!!

Day 6 of quarantine. First thing today we went for walk around the subdivision we live in. On the walk we walked past a driveway with a lot of worms half dead, so we saved them by putting them back in the lawn😊😀😁.  After that, we baked some Blondies. They are delicious and taste really crunchy and like chocolate. If you were wondering how to make them it will be down below. After eating lunch my dad and I went out for track-stands. If you were wondering what they are it is in my latest blog post. At the end of quarantine we are going to be pro's.

Blondies

Ingredients
1/2 cup milk or non dairy milk
2 Tbsp maple syrup
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1 Tbsp flax seed meal
2 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup almond butter or peanut butter (smooth)

1/2 cup flour ( we used GF flour but any flour will do)
1/4 cup almond flour
2 Tbsp coconut flour
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsb baking soda
1/4 tsb or more cinnamon
1/2 cup or more vegan or any chocolate

How to make
1. preheat the oven to 350 degrees F/ 180 C

2. in a bowl, warm the non dairy milk until hot. Add the rest of the wet ingredients and mix well until smooth. It will take a minute or so for the nut butter to mix in. ( warm the butter before adding so it mixes quicker.

3. in another bowl mix all the dry ingredients and add to the wet and mix in . fold in the chocolate chips or chunks.

4. Drop the batter on parchment lined pan ( 8 by 8 inch brownie pan ). Spread using oiled hands or spatula. Sprinkle some chocolate on top and then press in. ( optional )

5. bake for 22 to 24 minutes. ( or until a toothpick an inch from the edges comes out almost clean ). Cool for 15 minutes then remove from the pan. Cool for another few minutes before slicing.

Quarantine

Hello, I'm blogging on day 5 of quarantine. It wasn't what I expected though.  I thought it was going to be scary but it was much more fun. I had time to make some stuff I got for Christmas like a meccano race car. I had to make it out of bolts and nuts so it took a long time to make. I also got to go on the iPad for a bit and play with my friend online. I'm still sad about not seeing my friends but it is for our health and I don't want to get Coved-19. I have some games I do in quarantine like track-stands  on my ride with my dad. That's when you put you front brake (or back) on and try to not move or put your foot down for as long as you can and me and my dad have competitions of who can do it for longest!  Dad and I are getting better at them.

The jolliest Jolly jar

This term, our Project Based Learning (PBL) started with the teachers putting us into groups. In these groups we had to work collaboratively to create Jolly Jars for the school fair. This task helped us to begin exploring our PBL question for the term - How can we build community through our actions? We had to research ideas, be creative with our product, experiment with our materials and write instructions that could be followed by others.

Here is a link to my instructions.

I learnt that instructions need to be interesting good and it needs a doing word at the start good understanding steps a cool title to get peoples eyes to look.

Reflection on PBL:
For our Jolly Jar my group and I did origami animals.

I contributed to my group by helping with instructions when I was finished.

Our Jolly Jar was creative because we used good ideas and with it and you made lots of stuff  and you didn't have to do are ideas

What I learned about working with others was you don't have to do all your work with your friends you can do it with others.

How did we build community through our actions? By raising money for the bike track in our school,The fair was so fun and good for our school.
